Magnetic braking saturates: evidence from the orbital period distribution of low-mass detached eclipsing binaries from ZTF

چکیده

ABSTRACT We constrain the orbital period (Porb) distribution of low-mass detached main-sequence eclipsing binaries (EBs) with light-curves from Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), which provides a well-understood selection function and sensitivity to faint stars. At short periods (Porb ? 2 d), are predicted evolve significantly due magnetic braking (MB), shrinks orbits ultimately brings into contact. The is thus sensitive probe MB. find that intrinsic (0.1 M1/M? < 0.9) basically flat (${\rm d}N/{\rm d}P_{\rm orb} \propto P_{\rm orb}^0$) Porb = 10 d down contact limit. This strongly inconsistent predictions classical MB models based on Skumanich relation, widely used in binary evolution calculations predict ${\rm orb}^{7/3}$ at periods. observed distributions best reproduced by field saturates torque scales roughly as $\dot{J}\propto orb}^{-1}$, opposed $\dot{J} orb}^{-3}$ standard law. also no significant difference between containing fully partially convective Our results confirm saturated law, was previously found describe spin-down rapidly rotating isolated M dwarfs, operates tidally locked binaries. advocate using calculations. work supports previous suggestions cataclysmic variables (CVs) much weaker than assumed evolutionary model, unless mass transfer leads additional angular momentum loss CVs.

Effective temperature of detached eclipsing binaries from Hipparcos parallax

Effective temperatures of detached eclipsing binaries computed through Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes are compared with the photometric determinations. The former are based on the values of the radius, the apparent visual magnitude and the bolometric correction of the star, whereas the latter are obtained from standard calibrations using Strömgren or Johnson colour indices. The working samp...

Mass loss and orbital period decrease in detached chromospherically active binaries

The secular evolution of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), the systemic mass (M = M1+M2) and the orbital period of 114 chromospherically active binaries (CABs) were investigated after determining the kinematical ages of the sub-samples which were set according to OAM bins. OAMs, systemic masses and orbital periods were shown to be decreasing by the kinematical ages. The first order decreasing...

Parameters of two low - mass contact eclipsing binaries near the short - period limit

The two objects 1SWASP J150822.80−054236.9 and 1SWASP J160156.04+202821.6 were initially detected from their SuperWASP archived light curves as candidate eclipsing binaries with periods close to the short-period cut-off of the orbital period distribution of main sequence binaries, at ∼0.2 d. Here, using INT spectroscopic data, we confirm them as double-lined spectroscopic and eclipsing binaries...

Globular Cluster Ages from Main Sequence Fitting and Detached, Eclipsing Binaries: The Case of 47 Tuc

Age constraints are most often placed on globular clusters by comparing their CMDs with theoretical isochrones. The recent discoveries of detached, eclipsing binaries in such systems by the Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE) provide new insights into their ages and, at the same time, much needed tests of stellar evolution models. We describe efforts to model the properties of the detached, eclipsin...

Analysis of the eclipsing binaries in the LMC discovered by OGLE: Period distribution and frequency of the short-period binaries

We review the results of our analysis of the OGLE LMC eclipsing binaries (Mazeh, Tamuz & North 2006), using EBAS — Eclipsing Binary Automated Solver, an automated algorithm to fit lightcurves of eclipsing binaries (Tamuz, Mazeh & North 2006). After being corrected for observational selection effects, the set of detected eclipsing binaries yielded the period distribution and the frequency of all...
